A minimal version should carry the same rhythm and palette as the detailed illustration while asking less attention from the interface. The process is editorial: decide what makes the image itself, then remove information in a deliberate order.
Name the essential gesture
For a fish image, the essential gesture might be the curve from head to tail. For a reflection study, it might be three horizontal light bands. Write that sentence before simplifying; it becomes the rule for what must remain.
If every scale, bubble and flare feels essential, the hierarchy has not yet been established. Find the one relationship that would make the image recognizable as a thumbnail.
Remove texture before structure
Hide secondary particles, fine scales and distant debris first. Preserve silhouette, major value blocks and direction of light. This reduction keeps the composition legible instead of turning it into a soft but shapeless blur.
Combine neighboring colors that perform the same role. Several close blues can become one deeper field, while the small magenta accent stays distinct. Fewer color steps often improve icon readability.
Rebuild edges selectively
After removing texture, decide which edge deserves precision. A crisp eye or one luminous ripple can anchor an otherwise quiet image. Let other boundaries dissolve gradually into the background.
Do not sharpen the complete image after scaling down. Uniform sharpness reintroduces competition. Apply detail where it carries recognition or depth and leave supporting areas calm.
Export and compare honestly
Show detailed and minimal versions side by side at the same physical size. Compare the downloadable files, not screenshots at different zoom levels. Record dimensions and format for each version.
